Are you interested in feeding your dog a plant-based diet, but you’re afraid because you’ve read online that dogs are carnivores who “need” meat to survive—and that you’ll harm your dog if you just feed him/her plants? That’s enough to scare any diligent dog guardian!
But, we’ve got wonderful news for you. Dogs are most definitely omnivores who can THRIVE on a nutritious, balanced plant-based diet. Moreover, chronic diseases in dogs, including cancer, are skyrocketing and many veterinarians believe there is a correlation to the current high-meat diets. Want to learn more?

Prof. Knight delivered more than 150 oral or poster presentations on animal welfare issues, whether as an invited lecturer at universities, or at various conferences internationally. I cover a very wide range of animal welfare issues, as well as related topics, such as professional career paths in animal welfare and advocacy. His recent research interests include the contributions of the livestock sector to climate change, vegan companion animal diets, human-animal violence and the intriguing case of Jack the Ripper, sow farrowing crates, and injuries sustained by racing greyhounds.

Some claim vegan pet food may be less palatable, or may compromise animal welfare. But are such claims actually true? In 2020 we surveyed dog or cat guardians asking about behaviours displayed by their pets at meal times. Analysis of the behaviour of 2,308 dogs and 1,135 cats revealed no significant differences overall, between animals fed vegan or meat-based diets (conventional or raw meat). Our results indicate that vegan pet foods are generally at least as palatable to dogs and cats as conventional meat or raw meat diets, and do not compromise their welfare, when other welfare determinan...

Plant-based pet foods are rapidly developing, driven by distrust of conventional pet foods, and concerns about their impacts on pets, farmed animals, and the environment. But are plant-based pet foods nutritionally sound? Do consumers really need to be worried about conventional pet foods? Our recent study explored in detail, steps taken by pet food manufacturers to ensure the nutritional soundness and quality of pet foods. Most manufacturers, and especially those producing plant-based pet foods, had good standards overall. Our full study is: Knight A and Light N. (2021). The nutritional so...

Vegan pet food as healthy for cats and dogs as meat, says veterinary professor.
Vegan diets are just as healthy for cats and dogs as meat-based pet food, according to research that will further fuel a row over whether owners should feed their pets plant-based meals.
Andrew Knight, a veterinary professor at the University of Winchester, said his research showed that cats and dogs had as good, or better, health outcomes on plant-based diets as they did when fed on meat pet foods, provided these were carefully formulated with additional synthetic nutrients.

Vegan dog food is less damaging to the environment, and to the welfare of animals processed into pet foods. But – are vegan diets good for dogs? To test this, we collected data on 2,536 dogs fed a conventional meat (1,370 = 54%), raw meat (830 = 33%) or vegan (336 = 13%) diet for at least one year. We examined seven general indicators of ill health: unusual numbers of veterinary visits, medication use, progression onto a therapeutic diet after initial maintenance on a vegan or meat-based diet, guardian opinion and predicted veterinary assessment of health status, percentage of unwell dogs a...
